Elizabeth "Betty" Beese

Mary Elizabeth Rogers Fitzsimmons (Betty) Beese died peacefully on February 4, 2018 in Pompton Plains, NJ.  Betty had previously been a resident in River Edge, NJ for 25 years where she and her late husband, J. Carter Beese, raised their family of five children.  Betty was born in Baltimore, Maryland on August 18, 1930, the daughter of the late William J. Fitzsimmons and Mary Rogers Fitzsimmons.

Affectionately known as “Mimi” to her 11 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren, she was devoted to her family.  Friends and family were her passion and delight.

Betty attended Mount Saint Agnes High School, before attending the College of Notre Dame University for 3 years. After raising her children, Betty returned to school and earned her double degree from Felician College in NJ.

In 1965, she began teaching Latin and Physical Education at the Academy of the Holy Angels in Demarest, NJ.  In 1969, she moved to Dwight Englewood School in Englewood, NJ where she taught Latin and Fencing.

Returning to Baltimore, MD after her husband’s retirement from the Department of Justice, she continued teaching at Maryvale Preparatory School and was a substitute at Roland Park County School and Odess School.

Betty was a devout Catholic who participated in many organizations through which she truly lived her beliefs of kindness and compassion for all.  She was an active parishioner at St. Peter the Apostle Church in River Edge, NJ and was President of the Catholic League and President of Christ Child Society in Baltimore, MD.  She was invested as a Dame of Malta in 1995 (Her husband Carter was a Knight of Malta).  Betty was also a Eucharistic Minister at Cedar Crest Retirement Home in Pompton Plains, NJ.

Betty was predeceased by her loving husband of 59 years, J. Carter Beese. She was also predeceased by her son J. Carter Beese Jr.,her two sisters Mary Carol Wood, Jean Kennedy and her brother William Fitzsimmons. Betty is survived by her sister Nancy Ridgely Davis and her brother Robert Gahan Fitzsimmons. She is also survived by her four daughters: Mary Rogers Fischer (Rick) of Waldwick, NJ, Anne Carroll Kypraios of Winter Park, FL, Mary Elizabeth Beese of Fort Lee, NJ and Anne Marie Kelley (Mike) of Ringwood, NJ.  She is also survived by eleven grandchildren, Elizabeth Fischer, Christine Fischer, Melissa Kypraios Driver (Dave), Nicole Kypraios, Courtney Beese, J. Carter Beese III, Wilson Beese, Alex Beese, Brian Kelley (Katie), Andrew Kelley, Erin Kelley Jacobsma (Tyler). She had four great grandchildren (with 2 on the way): Colin Kelley, Miranda Kelley, Annabelle Driver, and Alexa Driver.

Visiting hours will be held from 4 to 8 pm Thursday, February 8 at the M. John Scanlan Funeral Home, Pompton Plains.  A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 am Friday at St. Luke’s RC Church, Ho-Ho-Kus.
