Janet Murphy

Obituary of Janet Murphy

Janet Margaret Murphy, a longtime resident of Pompton Plains, died peacefully at home Saturday, February 10, 2018.

Janet was the daughter of Margaret (Britt) and Charles Viscardi. She was born and raised in the Bronx. As a teenager, her family moved to Pompton Plains, and in 1952, Janet graduated from Butler High School. After graduation, she returned to the Bronx, living with her grandmother, while working for the telephone company.

Through friends, she was introduced to Thomas Murphy. The couple fell in love, and in 1959, they married. They settled in the same Bronx apartment Janet had been raised in, and welcomed four children to their family. In 1970, the Murphy family moved to Pompton Plains to escape city life and to raise their children "in the country."

While her children were young, Janet was a stay-at-home mom. She returned to the workforce when her youngest started school. With a push from a good family friend, Janet secured a job as a paraprofessional at Pequannock Valley Middle School in Pompton Plains. She loved working with the students and treasured the friendships she made with her colleagues. She enjoyed a 28-year career at the school before retiring in 2002.

Janet was known for her sweet, kind and caring personality. She had many friends -- some for more than 60 years. She was very active, independent, and always willing to lend a hand. She enjoyed getting lunch or going to the movies with the many people that filled her life.

Janet was adored by her grandchildren and had wonderful relationships with all of them. They were always at her home enjoying sleepovers, swimming, movies, games, treats and much more with her. They were her world, and they always knew how special they were to her.

Janet was “Nana” to more than just her grandchildren. She was loved by many neighbors and friends.

Janet had many hobbies, but her favorite was gardening and tending to her yard. She enjoyed nothing more than the simple pleasure of relaxing in the beautiful space she had cultivated throughout the years.

Janet is lovingly survived by her family. Her four children: Tommy, Robert and his wife Maryanne, Margaret Cook and her husband Clyde, and Jimmy and his wife Danielle.  Her grandchildren: Heather, Amanda and her husband Tim Haas, Michael, and Molly Cook; J.T., Samantha, Meghan, and Daniel Murphy; Jessica Allison and her husband Shawn, Bobby and Patrick Murphy; Brendan and Duncan Murphy. As well as her great-grandchildren: Alexis and Chase Allison and Zoë Cook Haas.

She was predeceased by her husband Thomas, and her sister Doris Cleary.

Visiting hours will be Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. at Scanlan’s funeral home. A funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church, Pompton Plains. Burial will follow at Our Lady of Magnificat Cemetery, Kinnelon.

In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Jude's Children's Hospital in Janet's memory would be greatly appreciated by the Murphy family.
