The Ultimate Selfie: Writing Your Own Obituary
October 13 and November 10, 1 – 3 p.m. at the funeral home.
Celebrities and famous people have “pre-obits” written by the news media – ready to insert into coverage when a luminary dies – but the average person leaves their obituary to the end, to be written by grieving family and friends.
It’s your life story and you are the one best suited to tell it.
“The Ultimate Selfie: Writing Your Own Obituary” is a class designed to produce an obituary that will tell your story when your time comes. Attendees work with Chuck Jaffe, a veteran journalist and former Boston Globe columnist, to write their own obituary over the course of two, 2-hour sessions.
Jaffe, who runs Heirloom Writing Services, will discuss the evolution – and backwards progress – of obituaries, providing guidelines and instructions so that you can avoid common problems to create an appropriate and fitting tribute that captures who you are. He will guide participants through the challenging family and personal issues that sometimes infect obituaries and will edit and polish the work of attendees to produce a story that is “ready, but not finished” for the day it will be needed in the future.
