Martha H. Brown

Martha H. Brown, formerly of Pompton Plains and recently a resident of Bristol Glen, Newton, NJ, went peacefully into the arms of her Lord on Tuesday, April 27, 2021.  Her family was with her throughout her passing.  She was 96 years old.  Martha was the second daughter if German immigrants Albert and Marie Harseim.  Born in Newark in 1925, she moved to Lyndhurst with her family as a young girl.  She graduated from Lyndhurst High School and then worked as a secretary to the engineering department at a defense contractor.  In 1946 she met Alvin Brown, a young soldier returning from World War II and they married in 1947.  In 1953 they bought a building lot in Pompton Plains and built a house where they lived for the rest of their 70 years together.

Martha was predeceased by her parents and her sisters, Kathryn Griffiths and Dorothy Youmans and her husband Alvin.  She is survived by her children, Gregory (Mary Ellen) of Long Valley and Ellen Preis (Randy) of Warwick, NY; her five grandchildren, Jeffrey (Sharon) Brown and Elizabeth Mahon (Robert) of Long Valley, Alden Preis (Jennifer) of Pine Island, NY, Bradley Preis (Rachel) of Warwick, NY and Nora Myerson (Aaron) of Newton, NJ; and seven great grandchildren, Michael and Meghan Brown, Ryan and Matthew Mahon, Abel, Allison, Lucas and Paige Preis, and Isaac Myerson.

Martha was a past president of the Suburban Women’s Club of Pompton Plains and a former member of Pompton Valley Presbyterian Church where she was active in the choir.

Family and friends may visit on Monday, May 10 at 3:00 at the M. John Scanlan Funeral Home, Pompton Plains.  A memorial service will conclude the visitation at 4:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Martha’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association, St. Jude Children’s Hospital, or the ALS Association would be greatly appreciated by her family.
