Eileen H. Hurtado

Eileen H. Hurtado, 80, a longtime resident of Lincoln Park, passed away Friday, January 7, 2022.

Born in New York City, Eileen was the daughter of Anthony and Irene (nee Giordano) Barbato. Raised in the Little Italy section of Manhattan, the family regularly visited their weekend home in Lincoln Park. Following her graduation from St. John's University, Eileen convinced the family to move to Lincoln Park full time.

While attending St. Joseph's Church in Lincoln Park, Eileen was introduced to Robert Hurtado. The two hit it off, and were married in 1967. Settling in Lincoln Park, they raised two children there, Anthony and Irene.

Eileen spent her career in education. She was first employed as a fourth grade teacher in Montville before moving to St. Joseph's Catholic School in Lincoln Park, where she taught and served as the school Principal. Eileen was much loved by the students and staff at the school, even though she was tough. Leaving St. Joseph's school in 1986, she worked as a second grade teacher at St. Paul's Catholic School in Clifton before retiring in 1991.

Throughout her life, Eileen was dedicated to helping animals. She would regularly volunteer with Noah's Ark, and would often go out on her own to assist stray cats and dogs, helping to spay or neuter them and find a forever home for them to be loved in. She always had cats and dogs at home, too, and loved each and every one of them very much.

In 2006, Eileen was blessed with the birth of her grandson, Robert "Robbie" Elko. Living with her daughter and Robbie, Eileen became a second mother to him. She was always taking him to toddler groups, to the library, and was a regular fixture in all his schools. She was a very giving, thoughtful person who would do anything for anyone -- especially when it came to her family.

Eileen held a lifelong fascination with nature and science, and was known to always be sharing the wonders of the world with those around her. A true teacher at heart, she was always sharing information, lessons and knowledge wherever she went.

Eileen is lovingly survived by her son, Anthony Hurtado; her daughter, Irene Hurtado; her grandson, Robbie Elko; her sister, Frances O'John; and her nieces, Jennifer O'John and her fiance, Mark Tomaszewski, and Stephani Wright, her husband Ryan and their son Jack.

She was predeceased by her husband, Robert J. Hurtado, in 2015.

Visiting hours will be held Tuesday from 4-8 pmat the funeral home. A funeral Mass will be held 10 am Wednesday at St. Anthony's RC Church, Hawthorne. Cremation will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Eileen's memory to the Don Bosco Prep Salesian Scholarship Fund, Attn: Father Michael Conway, SDB; 148 E. Main St., New Rochelle NY 10801, would be greatly appreciated by the Hurtado family.
