John Martin, 69, passed away January 12, 2023.
John was born in 1953 to Raymond and Elizabeth Martin in Paterson, New Jersey, where he grew up. He attended St. Theresa School and Paterson Catholic High School. This was followed by two years of service in the Army.
Upon his discharge from the service, he became employed as a roofer. He fell in love with ladders and high places which naturally led to the fire service. He became a Paterson firefighter in 1979, an occupation he would cherish for over thirty years.
About this time, the dashing John could routinely be found wandering around Glen Rock Park for exercise. Also wandering in another part of the park was a striking gal named Val. One fateful day they stumbled upon each other, and the rest was history. They married in May of 1982, and over the next seven years they were blessed with two perfect children, Johnny and Eva. His family was the joy of his life, and he was a dedicated husband and father.
He loved long walks, reading, and watching Jeopardy, and in later years walking his best friend Cooper. He was a humble and truly selfless person whose quiet demeanor hid a sense of humor and a big heart. He loved being a fire Captain and loved serving with the wonderful men in his company.
John is survived by his wife, Valerie Martin; his children, John Martin and Eva Martin; his brother, Raymond Martin and sister-in-law, Nancy Martin; his sister, Mary Antelope; and his faithful companion, Cooper. He was a rare human being who will be sorely missed by his friends and family.
