William Ryan

Obituary of William D Ryan

William D. Ryan passed away peacefully on the morning of April 3, 2021, one day after his 85th birthday.

Bill was born in 1936 to Margaret (nee Dawson) and William D. Ryan.  He was raised in Bayonne, NJ along with his three younger siblings. He graduated from local schools and had many childhood friends with whom he maintained lifelong relationships.

In 1969, Bill moved to Pequannock Township where he and his family lived for over 30 years. When he retired from The Okonite Company in Paterson, NJ, Bill and his fellow retirees formed a close knit group. They called themselves the “Senior Tour.” They  played golf frequently and travelled to many golf courses together.  In 2007, Bill won the championship trophy at The Okonite Retiree Tournament. He moved to Lincoln Park, NJ in 2000 and he lived at Deer Run, a private golf course community.

As a lifelong fan of baseball, Bill could recount any player’s stats or a team’s history upon request.  The NY Yankees were his favorite team. When Bill and his grandchildren took a tour of Yankee Stadium, they took photos of themselves sitting in the Yankee dugout talking on the bullpen phone. In later years, Bill could be found sitting on his back deck listening to baseball games on the radio.

Bill enjoyed many summer days in the company of his sister, brother, nieces, nephew, and friends at the Jersey Shore. Whether a lazy summer day on the front porch or a lively family gathering, “Uncle Bill” always added his own sense of humor or unique form of mischief to any gathering.

He is survived by: William D. Ryan III (son), Nancy (Ryan) Sheridan (daughter), Martin Sheridan (son in law) Nikolas Sheridan and Gabrielle Sheridan (grandchildren), Robert J. Ryan (brother), and many loving nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by Karen A. Ryan (daughter), Margaret (Ryan) Bolger (sister), and David Ryan (brother).
