Obituary of James Peter Holian
James Peter Holian, age 68, of Millsboro, DE formerly of Kinnelon, NJ passed away peacefully on
Thursday, October 14, 2021 with his beloved wife of 45 years, Marianne (Panetta) Holian by his side in
the comfort of his own home.
Jim was born in Jersey City, NJ on November 25, 1952 son of the late Joseph Michael Holian and the late
Doris Ann (Rich) Holian. He graduated from St. Peter’s College in Jersey City with a BA degree in
Accounting and MBA degree from Wheeling College, Wheeling WV. He had a successful career with
Bayer Corporation and enjoyed his various positions within the company with a total of 33 years of
Jim had a strong faith that provided him a positive attitude even during the toughest times. He had a will
to fight his illness throughout the 16 years to the bitter end. He never gave up and accepted his
challenges with grace. Jim had a great sense of humor and enjoyed all types of gatherings and would
always make time for you no matter what. Jim especially loved hosting Thanksgiving for 20+ years for
family and friends or whoever didn’t have a place to go.
Jim loved golf, the NY Yankees and Giants and the fun of Fantasy Football. He enjoyed going to parades,
Broadway shows, Rockefeller Center and St. Patrick’s Cathedral at Christmas. He also loved various
types of music especially live symphonies. Jim loved New Jersey, the Jersey shore, Pittsburgh, Savannah
on St. Patrick’s Day, Charleston and of course, Delaware. He loved to travel, enjoyed driving scenic roads
and visiting our country’s National Parks. Jim was a lover of dogs as he was preceded in death by his
three Golden Retrievers: Casey, Murphy and Maggie and his Great Pyrenees: Mabel.
Jim will be remembered as an honest, private and special man that was devoted to his family and
friends. He was always willing to lend a listening ear, a helping hand and offered words of
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Susan Dudinyak. Jim is survived by his
loving wife and best friend, Marianne; his Australian Labradoodle, Bernie; four siblings, Joseph Holian
and his wife, Maureen of Union, NJ, Mary Mintz and her husband, Robert of Medfield, MA, Michael
Holian and his wife, Janis of Chandler, AZ and Mark Holian and his wife, Nicki of Needville, TX; a brother-
in-law, Frank Panetta and his wife, Phyllis of Succasunna, NJ; sister-in-law, Janet Luff and her husband,
Don of Andover, NJ and several nieces, nephews, great nephews and nieces and countless friends who
he loved dearly.
A visitation will be held from 1 to 2:30 PM on Wednesday, October 20, 2021 at the Long Neck Chapel of
Melson Funeral Services, 32013 Long Neck Rd., Millsboro, DE 19966, where a prayer service will be held
at 2:30 PM. A visitation will also be held from 4 to 7 PM on Thursday, October 21, 2021 at the M. John
Scanlan Funeral Home, 781 Newark Pompton Turnpike, Pompton Plains, NJ 07444. A Mass of Christian
Burial will be held at 10 AM on Friday, October 22, 2021 at Our Lady of the Magnificat Catholic Church, 2
Miller Rd., Kinnelon, NJ 07405. Entombment will follow in the adjoining cemetery.
