Obituary of Harold J Wehner

Harold John Wehner of Cedar Crest in Pompton Plains, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 2, 2021, at the age of 89.

Hal is adoringly remembered by his 5 children: Carole Walker and her husband Andrew, Bill Wehner and his wife Lisa, Diane (Papalambros) Wehner, Laura Rose and her husband Dave, and Jeanette Rudy.

Hal was born to John and Anna Wehner on September 15, 1932 in Jersey City, NJ. He grew up in Fairview, NJ and moved to Cliffside Park at the age of twelve. He graduated from Cliffside Park High School in 1949.

Hal began his career at Bendix Aviation in 1950 as a Draftsman. He was drafted into military service in 1953 during the Korean War. He was stationed in France and after being discharged, returned to work at Bendix.

Hal attended Fairleigh Dickinson University, receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering. At Bendix, he was Manufacturing Superintendent for the Guidance Systems Division, working on the Pershing Missile Program, the Saturn Program and the Apollo 11 which gave him the honor and distinction of having his name on the moon. He returned to the Guidance Engineering Group and continued working on several top-secret space programs.

At Bendix, he met his wife Anne O’Brien and they were married on June 28, 1958 in Teaneck, New Jersey. They lived in Bergenfield for seven years. In 1965, they moved to Washington Township in Bergen County where they lived for 34 years. Hal joined the Knights of Columbus, became a Fourth Degree Knight, and served in several officers’ positions until he became the Financial Secretary and served in that capacity for 17 years.

Hal is blessed with 14 grandchildren: Rachel and Brandon (Carole), Ryan, Kevin and Matthew (Bill), Danielle, Nicole and Christian (Diane), Alex, Jessica, Michael and Elliana (Laura) and Aidan and Alyssa (Jeanette).

After retirement, Hal and Anne moved to The Fairways in Lakewood, NJ. During the summer months they spent their days at the shore in Lavallette, NJ. They moved to Cedar Crest in 2006 after Anne became ill with Alzheimer’s. He remained by her side every day until her passing in 2012.

Hal then met Judy Silverstein, who became his devoted partner and fiancée. They spent the last 10 years in loving support of each other, enjoying life and each other’s company.

In 1995, Hal was diagnosed with Inclusion Body Myositis, a degenerative muscular disease. Despite this debilitating illness, he lived life to the fullest. He never allowed his disability to slow him down and he treated every day as a gift.
