Obituary of Betty Cass

Elizabeth “Betty” Cass, 99, passed away on December 1, 2021.

Born and raised in New York City, Elizabeth was the daughter of Michael and Catherine Considine.  She graduated from Cathedral High School and later worked as a secretary for MetLife. Betty married John Cass in 1947 and the couple lived in Rosedale, NY where they welcomed five children before settling in Pompton Plains in 1967.

Betty was involved with senior activities in town for over 30 years. She was an inspiration to many others with her positive energy, sharp mind, sense of humor and warm welcoming smile. She demonstrated that as you age you can still contribute to your community and help others.

Betty had been a Township resident since 1967. Her initial community involvement was with her children’s school, church and activity groups. From 2011 through 2017, Betty served on Pequannock Township’s Senior Citizen Advisory Committee helping to communicate and study senior citizens’ needs and recommending actions to the Township Council. She was a founding DISC 55 member. She worked as a poll worker for Primary and General Elections for over 20 years. Betty was an active member of the Friends of Library for over 15 years (1997-2015), handling correspondence and always working at book sales and other events. Betty was a member of Suburban Womens Club and a parishioner of Holy Spirit Church.

Elizabeth is survived by her daughters Betty Cass-Schmidt and her husband Arthur Schmidt, her son, Thomas and his wife Mary Ann and her daughter Clare Armbruster and her husband Tod; and her grandchildren, John Michael Cates and his fiancé Avery Boone, Kimberly Cass, Thomas Michael Cass, Amy Cass, Sean Armbruster and his fiancé Annie Shepherd, Luke Armbruster and his wife Jessica and Mary Armbruster; and dear family friends, Patrick Convery and Patty and Fred Bifulco.
