Kathryn Stratton

Obituary of Kathryn C. Stratton

Kathryn C. Stratton, 98, of Pompton Plains, died at home Sunday, December 5, 2021 in the care of her family.

Born in Dayton, Ohio, Kathryn was the daughter of Gordon and Anona Harrow. Raised primarily in Ohio, she graduated high school and entered the workforce amidst the chaos of World War II. She assisted the war effort working as a Quality Control Agent in a bombsight factory. Later, she worked at a nursery school, caring for little ones who's mothers were working while their fathers were fighting in the war.

Before a shift at the nursery school one day, Kathryn decided to kill some time by visiting her local movie theater. She caught the eye of Leslie Stratton, Jr., and he made sure to pursue her until she agreed to go out with him. The two quickly fell in love, and just a few months later, married in September of 1945.

Kathryn and Leslie moved to the east coast to be closer to his New York City-based family, and started their family in Westwood. The couple first welcomed a son, David, and later, two daughters: Deborah and Sarah.

Moving to Washington Township in Bergen County, Kathryn served her family as a homemaker, primarily staying home to raise her children and care for the home. When her youngest child, Sarah, started school, Kathryn returned to work at the Washington Township Public Library, a job she greatly enjoyed.

In 1987, Kathryn and Leslie retired to Fredericksburg, Virginia, and enjoyed living in the area until Leslie's death in 2008. Kathryn returned to New Jersey following the death of her husband, settling at Cedar Crest Village in Pompton Plains. There, she greatly enjoyed socializing with friends over card games, swimming in the beautiful facility pool, and participating in dramatic shows with the Players Club.

Kathryn was an outgoing, friendly, and smart woman. She was loved by her family, and will be dearly missed.

She is lovingly survived by her children, David Stratton, Deborah Lee North and her husband David, and Sarah McNeil Stratton; her sister-in-law, Jean Stratton; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Leslie, and her siblings, William Harrow and Joan Glanton.

Funeral services are being held privately for the family.
