Obituary of John James O'Kane
John J. O’Kane of Pequannock Township, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 29th, 2021, exactly one year after his childhood sweetheart and beloved wife of 61 years, Sheila(Lagan) had passed away.
John was born in New York City to the late John J. O’Kane of Newtownstewart, County Tyrone, and Alice(Davis) O’Kane of Labasheeda, County Clare, Ireland. While he had lived in Pequannock since 1974, St. Luke’s Parish in the South Bronx was always his true home. He and Sheila had attended St. Luke’s Grammar School and they often said that there was not a better place to have grown up, as Saint Luke’s had nurtured them in both their Catholic faith and their Irish heritage. John graduated from All Hallow’s High School in the shadow of Yankee Stadium; and was a lifelong Yankee fan. He attended Manhattan College full time days, worked a full time job at the Main Post Office in Manhattan at night; and graduated at the top of his class. He began his career in public accounting with Deloitte and retired from GAF Corporation. He was a longtime parishioner of Holy Spirit Church and a member of the Bishop Navagh Knights of Columbus.
John is survived by his children, Patricia and Stephen(Libia), his grandchildren, Brigid, Julie, Jimmy and Marie Fitzpatrick and Maria Kamila O’Kane, his sister in law, Rosella Harris, nieces and nephew, Tracey Pallante, Brian Harris, Kelly Burrows and Ann Clark. In addition, he is survived by his lifelong friends, Mary and Francis Murphy. John was predeceased by his sister in law, Ann Marie Lagan, and brother in law, Ronald Harris.
John was a devout Catholic, who had a particular devotion to St. Joseph. He was a kind, gentle, hardworking man who selflessly and generously provided for his family. Visiting hours will be held from 10am-12 pm on Wednesday, January 5th at M. John Scanlan Funeral Home with a funeral Mass at 12:30 pm at Holy Spirit Church. Burial will follow at Holy Rood Cemetery in Morristown.
