Obituary of Hubert J. McKenna
Hubert J. McKenna, 89, of Cedar Crest Village in Pompton Plains, formerly of Toms River and Lynbrook, NY, died Friday, February 4, 2022.
Born in Brooklyn, NY in 1932, Hughie was the first of his siblings to be born in the United State following his family's move from Ireland. Alongside his older brother, Patrick, and his younger brother, Edward, Hughie was raised in Bay Ridge and Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn NY.
After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving in a time of peace between World War II and the Korean Conflict. He later earned a career for the Long Island Railroad, working alongside his brother, Edward, with whom he was very close.
Marrying Barbara Keane, the couple settled in Lynbrook, NY, and led a very happy life together there before retiring to Toms River. Hughie adored his wife, and was a devoted husband. He was warmly welcomed into her family, and her large extended family became his as well.
Hughie was a quiet, reserved man, and will be remembered "as the sweetest guy you'd ever meet." He was committed to his family, and was a true pleasure to spend time with.
Hughie's spare time in life was spent on his airplane. He loved to fly, and even went as far as taking it completely apart, only to put it back together again. He wanted to know how each and every part was built and put together, he explained. He wanted to make sure he and his passengers were absolutely safe in the sky.
Hughie was predeceased by his wife, Barbara, in December. He was also predeceased by his brothers, Patrick, Edward and Joseph. He is lovingly survived by his many nieces, nephews and their families.
Visiting hours will be held Thursday from 3-7 pm at the funeral home. A funeral service will be held at 6 pm during visitation.
A graveside service will be held 11 am Friday at Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Hughie's memory to the Alzheimer's Association would be greatly appreciated by his family.
