George Illenye

Obituary of George M. Illenye

George S. Illenye, a longtime resident of Fayson Lakes, Kinnelon, died at home Sunday, February 27, 2022. He was 71.

Born in Passaic, George was the son of George and Julia Illenye. Raised in Passaic and Garfield, he was a 1968 graduate of Garfield High School. He went on to earn his degree in education from Jersey City State, and later earned his Masters in Administration from Kean University.

Growing up, George would spend his summers at Camp Ocawasin in West Milford every year. As a teenager, he became a counselor there, and in turn also became involved as a counselor at the Passaic Boys Club. He stayed with the Passaic Boys Club, working as the Assistant Director, until 1980 when he left to pursue his career in teaching.

Marrying WInifred Scheibener, the couple first lived in Garfield before moving to Fayson Lakes, where they settled and raised their two children. George became very involved with the Fayson Lakes Clubhouse, and served as its Beach Director for 30 years before officially retiring from the position in 2014.

George had a long career as an educator in the Passaic school system. His thirty-year career was spent in the High School, where he taught Math, as well as in the Middle School, where he taught Computer Technology. He was also a very active coach in the district, and served as the Girls Basketball Coach, the Football Coach, and the Softball coach during his tenure. Born with the gift of a "coach's voice," his booming commands and encouragements could be heard on even the noisiest playing fields.

George was beyond delighted to welcome the birth of his grandson, Shaun, in 2014. The two had a special bond, and especially enjoyed cheering on the NY Mets together, as well as watching Japanese wrestling.

George was an outgoing, well-loved man. He will be dearly missed by his loving family and his many, many friends and colleagues. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Winifred Illenye; his son, Shaun Illenye Sr. and his wife Jessica; his daughter, Catherine Illenye and her boyfriend Peter McCormack; his grandson, Shaun Illenye Jr.; his sisters, Judy Yarotsky, and Georgianne Garowsky and her husband Victor; his sisters-in-law, Linda Boardman and Christine Myers; as well as his nieces and nephews, John and Julie Yarotsky, Carey, Jennifer and Kristy Garowsky, Travis Cook, Erika Schmidt and Daniel Leaver.

Funeral services are being handled privately. A Memorial Service at the Fayson Lakes Clubhouse is being planned for the spring.

In lieu of flowers, donations in George's memory to the American Diabetes Foundation would be greatly appreciated.
