Helen Manno

Obituary of Helen Anna Manno

Helen Anna Manno, 98, of Pompton Plains, NJ passed away peacefully on March 31, 2022.

Born and raised in Guttenberg NJ, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Elizabet Sokolik.  She attended Memorial High School in West New York, NJ.

Helen worked as a Comptometer operator prior to her marriage to B. James Manno, and also for the U.S. Census Bureau in 1970 and 1980. Helen and Jim met at the Peggy Runway Lodge in Narrowsburg, NY and married in November 1948.

She resided most of her life in Oradell, NJ, where she raised three children. She was a dedicated, devoted and loving wife and mother.

Her hobbies included reading, gardening, baking, cooking and crocheting.  She crocheted many items which she generously donated to children’s hospital. She held several titles for the Oradell American Legion Auxiliary and was a longtime member of the Grace Lutheran Church in River Edge, NJ.

She enjoyed traveling to Jim’s yearly U.S. Coast Guard reunions, visiting family in Florida, and spending many summers with children and grand children at a lake camp near Bear Mountain State Park in New York. Her most enjoyable pastimes included spending time in nature, walking in the woods and rowing on the lake. The camp recognized her many contributions to campground improvements and her unassuming modesty, and created an award, naming her the “Quietest Camper.”  She will be remembered by all as a wonderfully humble, private and peaceful woman.

Her goals were mainly to raise her children to be safe, successful and accomplished.

Helen is survived by her husband B. James Manno, son James Manno (Tara), daughter Linda Culvert (Tim) and son Steve Manno. Her infant daughter Barbara Jean precedes her in death. She is also survived by grandchildren Jason Culvert (Kerry), Megan Graziano (Peter), Liam Culvert, Zack and Alex Manno and great grand children Samantha and Abigail Culvert, and Jack and James Graziano.
