Obituary of Christian VanderGroef
Christian (Chris) Vander Groef, 73, a longtime resident of Bloomingdale and West Milford, NJ, passed away at his home surrounded by his loving family on April 28th, 2022.
Chris was born in Passaic, NJ on September 27th,1948 before moving to Paterson. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1967 to 1970 during the Vietnam War. He met and married his wife Linda Genovese in 1971 and they recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
Chris was a licensed electrician for many years working at various companies before retiring from the Port Authority. He was adventurous and enjoyed outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, skydiving, and running. He ran the Philadelphia Marathon in 2007 and the NYC Marathon in 2008. He also had a second home in Fort Myers, Florida where he enjoyed playing golf and spending time with friends.
Most importantly, his family was his main priority in life. He was commonly seen attending baseball, football, and softball games cheering on his grandchildren. He recently took the entire family on two European cruises – one to the Baltic and one to the Mediterranean. He loved these trips more than anything – especially visiting Italy where he practically threw his entire wallet into the Trevi Fountain.
Chris is survived by his wife Linda, son Chris and daughter and law Jen, son Scott, brother Chuck, sister Lucille, and grandchildren – Taylor, Christian, Ava, and Hunter.
Memorial visitation will be held on May 14th from 1pm-4pm at M. John Scanlan Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 3:30 pm during the visitation.
