Catherine J. Moriarty, 90, of Pompton Plains, passed away peacefully at home on May 3, 2022.
Catherine was born in Jersey City to John and Ann Howard. She grew up in Clifton, NJ. Catherine attended Montclair State Teacher’s College, graduating in 1953. On July 11 of that same year, she married the love of her life, John Moriarty.
Catherine and John chose Pompton Plains to build their home and raise their family. Once her children were in school, Catherine worked for the Pequannock school system where she taught English, Reading, and Special Education.
Catherine loved to entertain and made her home a hospitable place for all who came to visit. She enjoyed creating special celebrations and memories for her family and friends. Her desire was to make others feel welcomed and part of the family.
Catherine also loved to travel domestically and internationally with family and friends. Destinations as close as the New Jersey Shore and Cape Cod and as far as Egypt and Alaska were among her many trips. She appreciated the history that other countries had to offer as well as the beauty of nature all over the world.
Catherine is survived by her son Mark H. Moriarty, MD and his wife Laura, her son John D. Moriarty and his wife Michelle, daughter Maureen Russell and her husband Robert; her brother-in-law Robert Moriarty; several beloved cousins; her 7 grandchildren; her 3 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Catherine was predeceased by her late husband John P. Moriarty.
A Memorial Mass for Catherine will be celebrated at Our Lady of Good Counsel RC Church in Pompton Plains on Saturday, May 14 at 10 am. Cremation to be held privately. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or United Help Ukraine be made in memory of Catherine.
