Patricia Cahill

Obituary of Patricia E Cahill

Patricia Cahill, 80, of Pompton Plains, devoted and beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away May 16, 2022.

She was born Patricia Ellen Mara in New York City and grew up in the Bronx as the middle sister between two brothers, Thomas and William, attending Catholic schools and later graduating from Thorpe Secretarial School. As a teenager, she met Lee Cahill, a friend of her older brother Tom; in 1963, Pat and Lee were married. In 1971 they settled down permanently in Pompton Plains, where they raised their two sons, Thomas and Michael.

Pat was a parishioner of Our Lady of Good Counsel and was involved in the church’s Bingo operations for many years. She lived a kind and generous life, always thinking about and helping others. In particular, she had an enormous love for babies and small children and a gift for taking care of them, which she displayed not only in raising her own kids but also, once they were in school, by serving with Lee as foster parents to many babies over nearly a decade. Later in life, Pat and Lee expressed their love for children as benefactors of Chilton Medical Center, making substantial contributions to support the hospital’s Special Care Nursery.

Pat spent a number of years serving Pequannock Township’s school system, first as attendance officer at the high school in the 1980s, where students and colleagues alike appreciated her caring but no-nonsense approach. She could always sniff out a bogus excuse for a student’s tardiness or absence but was more likely to share a wink and a laugh about it than a harsh word. She later served as administrative assistant to the Pequannock Board of Education’s Superintendent and Curriculum Coordinator, where her presence at the front of their office space above the town’s post office ensured a lively, welcoming, and lighthearted atmosphere. She retired in 2003.

Pat will be remembered by her family and her many friends for her convivial and outgoing nature. She loved fun and games, especially card games; she loved a good joke, even if at her own expense; and most of all, she loved company and conversation — which she seldom lacked, as her good cheer and impish humor drew others to her, and kept them close, throughout her life.

She is survived by her loving husband Lee; her sons Thomas Cahill (and his wife Melanie Cahill) and Michael Cahill (and his wife Rosalyn Scaff); and her grandchildren Rowan and Tessa Cahill.

Visitation will be held Sunday, May 22, 2022, from 2-6pm. A Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Good Counsel RC Church in Pompton Plains, NJ on Monday, May 23, at 11am. Cremation will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to Chilton Medical Center Foundation, in memory of Patricia.
