Obituary of William T. Winter

Please share a memory of William to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

William T. Winter, age 90, of Cedar Crest Village in Pompton Plains, formerly a longtime resident of West Caldwell, died Saturday, May 21, 2022.

Born in Baltimore, MD, William was the son of John and Marguerite Winter. Growing up in Maryland, he was a graduate of the University of Baltimore. He later served in the Army Signal Corps.

Marrying Laura Carter, the couple settled in Lutherville, Maryland to start their family. A salesman, William worked for many years for the Toledo Scale Company. In 1967, he was given the opportunity to represent the Northeast territory, and in turn, moved his family to West Caldwell, NJ.

While raising his four sons in West Caldwell, William was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Caldwell. He also served as an Indian Guide, a Boy Scout leader, and was a member of the Republican Club. He served as a Republican Committee Member in 1986, and was a longtime contributor to Republican politicians throughout the country.

In 1986, William started his first business representing the Toledo Scale line to the tri-state area: WT Winter Associates. He later founded Integrated Scale Systems Inc., Lizard Label Inc. and Valdata Systems USA Inc., where he served as CEO. Three of his sons (Jonathan, Thomas and Joseph) joined William in his businesses, and he successfully created a strong legacy to support his family.

Moving to Cedar Crest Village in Pompton Plains in 2006, William was a wonderful husband to Laura after her struggle with several strokes. In addition to working with his sons well into his 80s, William was Laura's primary caretaker. He loved her dearly, and would do anything for her.

After collecting stamps as a young man, William's passion for collecting was reignited in his early 80s when he started collecting coins. He displayed them throughout his home, and was proud to share his knowledge about each of them.

William is lovingly survived by his sons, William Jr. and his wife Phyllis, Jonathan and his wife Elin, Thomas, and Joseph; ten grandchildren: Christine, Lindsay, Courtney, Bowden, Bevin, Eric, Casey, Jack, Jessica, and Carrie; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife, Laura, in 2019. He was also predeceased by his siblings, Jack Winter (WWII Veteran) and Nan Spencer.

Visiting hours will be held 12-2 and 6-8 pm Friday at the Chapel at Cedar Crest Village, Pompton Plains. A graveside service will be held 11 am Saturday at the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Caldwell.
