Obituary of Anita G. Schmetterling

Please share a memory of Anita to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Anita G. Schmetterling, 92, of Cedar Crest Village in Pompton Plains, died peacefully Thursday, June 2, 2022.

Born in Brooklyn, Anita was the youngest child born to Abraham and Ida Kaplan. Raised in Brooklyn, she graduated from high school there before earning her degree in education from Hunter College.

Marrying Harold Schmetterling, the couple settled in Smithtown, New York, to raise their family. After staying home for a number of years to care for her children, she returned to work as an educator, and was employed by the Easter Suffolk County Boces. In addition, she earned her Masters in Counseling, and spent the later part of her career in that profession.

Anita and Harold retired to Palm Coast, Florida, in 1990, and greatly enjoyed their life there. Following Harold's passing in 2005, Anita moved back to New Jersey to be closer to family. She settled into Cedar Crest Village in Pompton Plains in 2008, and greatly enjoyed her life there. She was a participant in many of the community's activities, including painting, guitar, and playing bridge, and also offered her services as a Counselor, providing bereavement counseling to many of the Cedar Crest residents. Anita had a real zest for life, and enjoyed taking advantage of all the opportunities afforded to her.

Anita is lovingly survived by her children, Andrew Schmetterling and his wife Paula, and Lisa Sosin and her husband David; and her grandchildren, Timothy Sosin, Drew Schmetterling, Sara Schmetterling, and Josh Sosin. She was predeceased by her husband, Harold, her son, Steven, and her siblings, Lily Ort, Lawrence Kaplan, Dorothy Fleischer, and Dan Kaplan.

Cremation will be handled privately. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Jude's Children's Hospital in Anita's memory would be greatly appreciated.
