Winifred Frio

Obituary of Winifred T. Frio

Winifred T. Frio, 82, of Forked River, formerly of Pequannock, died Saturday, August 6, 2022 surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Brooklyn, Winifred (or Winnie by many) was one of three children born to Thomas and Theresa Jordan. Raised in Hoboken, she attended the Academy of the Sacred Heart, was president of the Student Council, was co-captain of her basketball team and graduated as the Valedictorian of her class.  Winnie earned a full scholarship to Seton Hall University, finishing her bachelor degree in just 3 years. She then went on to complete her Masters degree in Nursing.

Marrying Joseph Frio on September 30, 1961, the couple settled in Pequannock, where they raised their six children. While raising her kids, Winnie worked as a school nurse first at North Boulevard School in Pompton Plains and then moving to Pequannock Valley (PV) Middle School where she spent over 25 years until her retirement. She also worked a second job at night as a Nurse Practitioner at Dr. Lascari's office, also in Pequannock.  She was tireless, hard-working, compassionate, extremely organized and always was ready to roll up her sleeves to get work done. Despite working two jobs, she still had time to teach CCD, chair the DePaul High School's St. Patrick's day dances, and be a surrogate parent to many of her children's friends. When someone needed advice or medical assistance, it was often Winnie they called.

The Jersey shore was a special place for Winnie, and she especially enjoyed family vacations to LBI. After retiring, Winnie and Joe bought their dream home in Forked River, where they could sit on their deck and admire the bay waters with the Barnegat Lighthouse in the distance.  Just as she had been active while raising her kids and working, Winnie jumped right in to volunteer at her homeowner's association.  You would often find her playing Mahjong with new friends in the community.

Winnie had a passion for golfing, reading, and her Irish heritage. She regularly enjoyed vacations to Ireland, where she loved to visit her extended family. She also had a love for Irish music.

Winnie is lovingly survived by her husband of 60 years, Joseph Frio; her six children, Don and his wife Sarah, Dan and his wife Maria, Dennis and his wife Dawn, Jeanne and her husband Bryan Bermudez, Cathy and her husband Trevor Smallwood, and Joe and his wife Danielle; her sister, Candy and her husband Rick; and her fifteen grandchildren, Zak, Christina, Justin, Hunter, Amanda, Josh, Alyson, Sam, Emily Rose, Hannah, Will, Charlie, Matthew, Ava and Ben.

She was predeceased by her sister, Marie and her husband, Ray Martignoni.

Visiting hours will be Thursday, August 11th from 4:00pm-8:00pm at the funeral home.  A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, August 12th, 11:00am at Holy Spirit Church in Pequannock, NJ.
