Just heard of Mike's passing and my condolences go out to his family. I knew Mike (Booper) since he was a kid playing Biddy Basketball with his brothers and his father helped run the league. As adults I would run into him occasionally as we were both in college athletics. Always enjoyed seeing him and our conversations about Secaucus. He was always smiling and a class act through and through. He will certainly be missed by all who knew and loved him. RIP Mike...you did good!

Wow. Seeing the masses of people lined up to pay their respects tonight just shows the measure of the man Mike was. I had the pleasure of working with him for almost a decade.
I was reminded of this poem that brought me great comfort when my father in law passed and after seeing the outpouring of people who Mike impacted tonight, I wanted to share:
The Dash Poem by Linda Ellis
I read of a man who stood to speak
At the funeral of a friend
He referred to the dates on the tombstone
From the beginning...to the end
He noted that first came the date of birth
And spoke the following date with tears,
But he said what mattered most of all
Was the dash between those years
For that dash represents all the time
That they spent alive on earth.
And now only those who loved them
Know what that little line is worth
For it matters not, how much we own,
The cars...the house...the cash.
What matters is how we live and love
And how we spend our dash.
So, think about this long and hard.
Are there things you'd like to change?
For you never know how much time is left
That can still be rearranged.
If we could just slow down enough
To consider what's true and real
And always try to understand
The way other people feel.
And be less quick to anger
And show appreciation more
And love the people in our lives
Like we've never loved before.
If we treat each other with respect
And more often wear a smile,
Remembering this special dash
Might only last a little while
So, when your eulogy is being read
With your life's actions to rehash...
Would you be proud of the things they say
About how you spent YOUR dash?

Mike was a great person who helped me on a few occasions when attending Montclair State University. He was a true professional and you knew he was good at what he did! Montclair State sports are where they are today because of all his dedication and hard work! I am saddened to hear of his passing and send my prayers and condolences to his wife Jamie and their three children. RIP Mike, you will be missed.

My condolences to the Scala family. I met the family through the Pompton Lakes cheerleading program. Mike was such a sweet, caring person and his wife Jamie is a caring and giving person also. There was never a day that I saw them that he didn't have a smile on his face and he would always have the time to stop and talk with you! I am very greatful that I had the pleasure of getting to know him and his family! My heart goes out to his wife and kids for their loss. He was a great man and father! My prayers are with the family

Mike Scala was simply THE BEST of THE VERY BEST, as a kind, humble, and selfless person, as well as a LOVING Husband, and PROUD Father of three Wonderful Children. Mike was a ‘Montclair Man,’ through and through, with a tremendous and undeniable LOVE for His University, the students he mentored and supported through athletic events and Community Service Projects, along with the many Administrators, Academic Advisors, Departmental Support Staff, Secretaries, Custodians, Trainers and Coaches that he admired individually and greatly. I am confident that he now knows, although I felt he always did, that WE LOVED and Admired him more then HE will ever know. In his quiet, yet demanding style for perfection, Mike made each of us better individuals and professionals by his sincere desire to cooperate, and exceedingly go out of his way to make each of us feel as though our Programs were the only ones the department sponsored. His job description was highly detailed ranging from 23 Sports to the current 18, BUT his actions continually proved to be open ended. There was NEVER an instance where Mike said NO, to anyone, it was ALWAYS YES, and with his uncanny intelligence, invariably helped to make a tough situation much more workable. ALL of my aforementioned colleagues although highly successful in their own individual right, were and will continue to be replaced, BUT not MIke Scala, he was, and will continue to remain, the one constant that is irreplaceable within The MSU Athletic Community. Anyone would feel extremely fortunate to meet just one, Mike Scala, during a lifetime; we, as a department were given a GODSEND, having the unique opportunity to see visually, and communicate daily with Mike throughout our professional careers. I LOVE Mike Scala, as I’m certain we ALL do; GOD willing, that daily communication with the man who possesses THE MOST GIANT OF HEARTS, never ceases. REST IN PEACE, MY DEAR FRIEND…

Dear Scala family there's not enough words that I can say about Michael (BOOPER) as I knew him . He was funny kind and just a CLASS ACT. I've known BOOPER and his family for over 40 yrs. We had so many laughs over the years especially when it came to the HONEYMOONERS we both loved imitating them and as much as I know about them he knew as much as I. My heart is broken and may GOD BLESS BOOPER AND HIS FAMILY .LEAVE IT THERE THE CAT A GET IT (FROM THE HONEYMOONERS) YOUR DEAR FRIEND ARTIE JAHN
