Obituary of Mary B. O'Connor

Please share a memory of Mary to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Mary O’Connor, 83, of Pompton Lakes, passed away October 15, 2022.

Mary was born in County Galway, Ireland, to John and Catherine Monaghan.  At the young age of 14, Mary made the courageous journey to the United States to seek a new life of her own.  She completed her education and attended business school in Queens, NY and found employment in New York City.  She met her husband Michael O’Connor “Jerry,” and the two eventually settled and raised a family in North Arlington, NJ.  Mary was enormously grateful for her three sons, her husband, and the blessings of life in her adopted country.  After retiring as a legal secretary at Carpenter, Bennett & Morrissey in Newark, she and Jerry settled in Pompton Lakes to be closer to her family and her church.

Mary was a devoted parishioner of Our Lady of Fatima RC Church in Pequannock.  She dedicated much of her life to supporting the growing parish – becoming a founding member and even teaching in the affiliated grammar school for many years and substituting, later in life, in charity to help out the teachers.  Mary loved her fellow parishioners and greeted all with her amazing smile, Irish wit and tender concern and promises of prayers.  She knew, in the moment, what everyone needed, and her generosity of spirit was boundless.  Mary was a member of the Rosary and Altar Society and a proud member of the Third Order of Discalced Carmelites.

Mary loved to learn and attended many Catholic retreats and conferences where she cherished deepening her love of God and her faith.  She had a passion for playing piano, and revived lessons later in life to everyone’s amazement and respect.  She loved Irish music, along with her husband, and they were a beautiful couple to watch on the dance floor.  They especially enjoyed the time they spent in the Irish Catskills or “Irish Alps,” vacationing with family and hearing their favorite bands.  The scenery of the mountains brought peace and solace to Mary and remembrance of her home where she grew up as a child.

Mary was known for her bright outlook.  There was so much to be grateful for, especially for her family.  She was a dedicated wife and mother but once she became a grandmother, her heart was filled with so much love to give.  She loved devoting her time to being a grandmother especially later in life when she became a great-grandmother.

Mary is predeceased by her son Brian O’Connor; her brothers John, Edward, and Michael Monaghan and her sister Margaret Doyle.

Mary is survived by her beloved husband Michael J. O’Connor; her sons Michael O’Connor and his wife Margaret, Sean and his wife Michelle; her sister Kathleen McGoldrick; her loving grandchildren Brian and his wife Ashley, Joe and his wife Dominique, Tim and his fiancé Darby, Dan, Pete, Jack, Marty, Michael and his fiancé Courtney, Kevin and his wife Anneliese, Tom and Mary; and her beloved great-grandchild Ciaran with another great-grandchild on the way.
