Obituary of Patrick Sweeney
Patrick Sweeney, of Kinnelon, died suddenly Wednesday, October 19, 2022. He was 57.
Born in Bloomfield, Patrick was one of five children born to Hugh and Ellen Sweeney. Raised in Bloomfield, he was a proud graduate of Immaculate Conception High School in Montclair.
Patrick went on to study business at Montclair State University, and while there, fell in love with Dina Morra. The couple started their relationship with a first date to see Genesis on October 3, 1986 at Madison Square Garden (a story everyone heard told, and retold, by Patrick). On April 25, 1992, the couple wed, and together settled in Kinnelon to start their family.
Patrick worked in Currency and Electrical Trading, but retired early on in his career to be a devoted father to his children. He was present for everything; he never missed a game or an activity that his children were involved in, and would even attend everything on the calendar for his nieces and nephews, as well as his friends' children. He was always available and eager to help both friends and strangers. Patrick was who you would turn to for a ride to the airport, for help changing a tire, or to help when you needed an extra set of hands for a chore around the house. He was always happy, smiling, and even whistling.
Upon hearing of his passing, friends described Patrick as a "salt of the earth" kind of man. He truly did make a mark on those around him, and made earth a better place because he was in it. He will be truly missed.
Patrick is lovingly survived by his wife of 30 years, Dina M. Sweeney; his children, Michael Patrick and Kayla Ann Sweeney; his brothers, Hugh Sweeney Jr. and his wife Patty, Sean Sweeney, and Kevin Sweeney and his wife Missy; his sister, Ellen Sherry and her husband Bo;his mother-in-law, Ann C. Morra; his sisters-in-law, Michele Schwartz and her husband Brian, and Nicole Engle and her husband Bob; his many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; as well as his beloved dog, Oakley.
Visiting hours will be Monday from 4-8 pm at the funeral home. A funeral Mass will be held 10 am Tuesday at Our Lady of Magnificat Church, Kinnelon. Cremation will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Patrick's memory to Immaculate Conception High School, 33 Cottage Place, Montclair, NJ 07042 or to the Watsessing Athletic Club, which Patrick was a member of and which provides scholarships to underpriveleged kids, would be greatly appreciated by the Sweeney family. Donations to the Watsessing Club can be mailed to: 99 Garrabrant Avenue, Bloomfield, NJ 07003.
