Obituary of Jose Vales

Please share a memory of Jose to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Jose Vales fondly known as “Pepe”, 89, of Pompton Plains, passed away December 13, 2022.

Jose was born and raised in Leiro, Spain where he also served in the Spanish Army. When he was 21 years old, he made the courageous move to the United States. Being poor, with not much to bring over to the US, he had his ambition and aspiration.  He settled in Greenwich Village, in New York City. He taught himself how to speak English as a second language and picked up many handy trades to be self-sufficient. While in the city, he was a lifelong employee at AT&T, later known as Lucent. He later met Frances Naveira, while in the city. Frances knew Jose’s family and later they both ended up living in the same building as each other, where their relationship started to flourish. They got married and since Jose’s passing, they were married for 65 years.

In 1971, Jose and Frances later moved to Pompton Plains where they have been for 50 years. They wanted to be closer to family that have already been in Pompton Plains. Jose was a family man, he even helped his own family members move from Spain to the United States so they could all be together. Jose for the most part of his life, had two jobs to make sure his family was taken care of, but always found time to be with his wife, son, and other family members such as his nieces and nephews. Jose loved going to social events and traveling with Frances all over the world. He was an avid member at Spa 23 in Pompton Plains and loved going. He would take spin classes or just enjoy doing his own workouts. He was known as the “mayor” of Spa 23. On Jose’s down time, he would enjoy knitting. When he would take the train into work in the past, you would see him joyfully knitting scarves for his friends and family and enjoy the calming effect it gave him. He will be missed for his kindness and his generosity towards others and love for his family.

Jose is survived by his wife Frances Vales; his son Richard Vales and his wife Barbara; his brother Frank Vales; his sister Mary Vales; his granddaughters Katie and Maura; and many nieces and nephews.

A wake will be held Friday December 16, 2022 from 2-4pm & 7-9pm at the M. John Scanlan Funeral Home. Friends and family are welcome to give final goodbye to Jose at 9am at the funeral home Saturday December 17, 2022. A service and interment will follow, taking place at Laurel Grove Memorial Park & Cemetery, Totowa NJ at 10am Saturday. In lieu of flowers, the family ask that memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or a charity of choice.
