Obituary of Mary Elizabeth Carusona
Mary Elizabeth Heatley Reeves Carusona, 99, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 29, 2022.
Mary was born on September 26, 1923 in Paterson, New Jersey to the late William A. and Mary (Mason) Heatley. She resided in Paterson for 24 years, graduating from Eastside High School and, later, completing her studies at Katharine Gibbs School in Montclair.
Upon graduating from Katharine Gibbs, Mary worked for several years in New York City as a secretary for Otis Elevator before beginning an almost 30- year career as a customer service representative for New Jersey Bell.
Following World War II, Mary met the love of her life, George W. Reeves, and they were married in Paterson in 1947. The couple later moved to Hawthorne, NJ and resided there for 31 years before constructing a home at their beloved “Jersey Shore” in Manchester Twp. After George’s death, Mary continued to reside there for many years and was active in volunteer work and as a member of the community’s many social organizations. She met and married Armand Carusona and they remained in Manchester Twp. for many years.
Mary was known as a very active and vibrant woman, always amazing others with her intelligence and sharp wit. Many compared her to the late Queen Elizabeth due to her family’s British ancestry and her subtle elegant flair. She loved to revel others, especially her family, with vivid accounts of her world travels and numerous escapades throughout her life. She was the “life of the party” and a source of joy and laughter with her “sassy” commentaries. Her love of family, especially her grandchildren, and her fondness for tradition will never be forgotten.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Susan Reeves Favale and her husband, Ralph, of Rockaway Twp., NJ, and her beloved grandchildren, Cristina M. Favale of Brooklyn, NY and Charles G. Favale, of Holtsville, NY. She is also survived by her brother, James Heatley and his wife, Janet, of New Bern, NC, her sister-in-law, Marye Heatley, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, George, and her second husband, Armand, as well as her dear companion, Robert Van Iderstine.
A Celebration of Mary’s Life will include a visitation on Thursday, January 5, 2023 from 2pm to 5pm at the M. John Scanlan Funeral Home, 781 Newark Pompton Turnpike, Pompton Plains, NJ 07444. A service will be held at the funeral home at 10:00 am on Friday, January 6. Interment will follow at Cedar Lawn Cemetery, Paterson, NJ.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital or to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
