Obituary of Marie Louise Gadaleta

Please share a memory of Marie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Marie Louise Gadaleta, age 92, passed peacefully on Sunday, January 1, 2023.

Marie and her twin sister, Freida, were the youngest of four children born to Giovanni and Fortunata Amedolia, but the first children born in the United States after Giovanni and Fortunata escaped poverty in Sicily for the promise of America. Born and raised in Union City, Marie graduated from Emerson High School before entering the workforce, working for the telephone company in New York City.

In 1951, Marie married a fellow Italian Dominic Gadaleta. Initially continuing to live in Union City, the couple and their three children, Dominick, Michael, and Anne Marie, moved and settled in Little Ferry.

After raising her young children, Marie returned to the workforce where she spent more than 35 years working in the Human Resources department for UPS in Saddlebrook, a job she thoroughly enjoyed. And when not working, Marie was proud to provide delicious home-cooked meals, an organized household, and a warm embrace for her husband and her children to rely on.

Sadly, Dominic passed away suddenly in 1979, leaving Marie a widow. But, she worked tirelessly to provide for her children and stick to the commitment she and Dominic shared to ensure their children would be educated and finish college.

Always the head and the heart of the family, Marie shined once she became a grandmother. She assisted with childcare for all eleven of her grandchildren, even driving all the way to Long Island so she could watch her son's children when they were young. She delighted in being around her grandchildren and was an integral part of raising them.

Marie remained in Little Ferry for more than 35 years before moving to Riverdale in 2000, and later to Cedar Crest Village in Pompton Plains. She was a talented gardener, an avid sewer known especially for her Halloween costumes for her grandchildren, enjoyed the company of her pet cockatoos, and continued her cooking, hosting every holiday celebration for her growing family for years. Her specialties included Italian dishes like beef braciole and 'Sunday Gravy', but she experimented with new cuisines as well, including Japanese and Chinese dishes. Throughout this time she also joined her family on their annual vacations to the Caribbean.

Marie is lovingly survived by her children, Dr. Dominick Gadalata and his wife Lynn, Michael Gadaleta and his wife Lynne, and Anne Marie Kelly and her husband Kevin; her twin sister, Freida Garofalo; her grandchildren, Nicole, DJ, Kemi, Erick, Michael, Nicholas, Allison, Kevin Michael, Alexander, Dominique, and Robert; as well as her great-grandchildren, Jackson, Harper, Ella, Max, Michael, Jonathan, Nicholas, and Franco.  She is also survived by her loving nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband Dominic, and her siblings, Joseph Amendolia and Josephine Scalzo.

Visiting hours will be Thursday from 4-7 pm at Our Lady of Magnificat Church, 2 Miller Road, Kinnelon. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, also at the church. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery, Lyndhurst.
