My condolences to the Martin family. I went to St Therese K and 1st grade with John and later Paterson Catholic HS for four years. Later I became a Paterson Firefighter and worked with Captain Martin for 22 years. Rest In Peace brother.

I came to know John when I was four years old when my family moved next door to his family on Wall Ave. We would play together with the large number of other kids that lived in the neighborhood. We eventually became classmates at St Therese School when I started 2nd grade there. We went to different high schools and did not see each other much and then John joined the army. When he came back we re-kindled our friendship and hung out with a small group of friends. But again, as years went by and life got in the way, we did not see each other much except for special family events. But through the years, even if we had not seen each other for a while, we would pick up where we left off as if we saw each other the previous week. We would reminisce about old times and St Therese's and catch up on recent events. The last time I saw John was a little over a year ago when I was moving out of the area. He and his family came over for dinner and we had a really nice evening together. I did speak to him once again in the spring. Little did I know that it would be the last time I saw and spoke to him. I am sorry that there were gaps in our time spent with each other and I regret that there won't be opportunities to get together in the future. John was a quiet person but he had such a dry sense of humor that I enjoyed. I will miss that.
I offer my sincere condolences to Val, John and Eva and also to Mary, Ray, Nancy and the rest of the family.
R.I.P. John.

It's hard to believe that John is no longer with us but I will always remember him as one of the kindest, most generous people I ever new.
My late husband, Tom, and I were friends of Val's family and met John when he and Val were dating. Years later when Tom died, John and Val were there for me 'big time'. I am forever grateful for their kindness and support.
John served his country. He served the community, putting his life at risk. And he served his family and his friends. He was truly one of the good guys.
