John Joseph Dietz, 98, of Pompton Plains, passed away on March 7, 2014.
Born in Germany, John married Anne Herkel in 1937 and the couple settled in New Milford before moving to Cedar Grove to raise their family. John was a member of the American Radio Relay League and was a ham radio operator since he was 15 years old. He worked as an electrical and nuclear engineer for McGraw Edison for 38 years and owned Xavier Corporation in Manchester, NH. He was a member of Rotary International and the Knights of Columbus and a parishioner of St. Catherine’s Church in Cedar Grove. In 2002, John and Anne moved to Cedar Crest Village in Pompton Plains where John started the Eureka Society. An amateur poet, John wrote a poem for his wife every day for 25 years.
John is survived by his wife of 76 years, Anne; his daughter, Theresa Rumore and her husband Nathan; his Godson, Andrew Kostka and his wife Denise; and his grandchildren, Stephanie Murray and her husband Kyle, and Jonathan Rumore.
A funeral Mass will be held 10 am Wednesday, March 12 at Holy Angels RC Church, Little Falls. Interment will follow at Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Montclair. Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm Tuesday, March 11at the M. John Scanlan Funeral Home, Pompton Plains.
In lieu of flowers, donations in John’s memory to the Cedar Crest Village Benevolent Fund would be greatly appreciated by his family.
