Howland J. Ungemach Jr., 80, of Wayne since 1955, died Thursday, July 27, 2006 at Renaissance Gardens Nursing Home in Pompton Plains.
Born in Passaic, Howland was the son of the late Howland Sr. and Frances (nee Sullivan) Ungemach. Raised in Nutley, he was a 1942 graduate of Nutley High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the military, enrolling in the Air Force Cadet Program in California, becoming a navigator. He was released from the military upon the end of World War II in 1945, and went on to pursue an engineering degree at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. Afterwards, he earned his masters in engineering at the Newark College of Engineering (now N.J.I.T.).
Howland was employed for 30 years by Lockheed Electronics in Plainfield before he retired in 1989.
In 1952 Howland met Mary C. Hackett at St. Mary?s in Nutley, and the two wed a year later. Settling in the Pines Lake section of Wayne in 1955, the couple raised six children, and in the meantime, became very active in their community. Howland was an active parishioner of St. Mary?s R.C. Church in Pompton Lakes, including being a member of the church?s choir. He was also a member of the Pines Lakes Association, the Pines Lake Sailing Club, and the Jet-14 Class Association.
Howland is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary; his sons Howland J. III of Wayne, Raymond J. of Long Valley and James W. of Wayne; his daughters Catherine M. Miller of Holland Twp., Diane M. McPeek of Vernon, and Anne F. Livingston of Portsmouth, RI; and his 16 grandchildren: Lisa, Howland J. IV, Gregory, Amilia, Weston, Violet, Adam, Brendan, Kieran, Mary C. Miller, Sarah Miller, Katie McPeek, Brian McPeek, Matt McPeek, Harry Livingston and Emma Livingston.
Funeral services will commence 9 a.m. Monday from the funeral home, and will proceed to a 10 a.m. funeral Mass at St. Mary?s R.C. Church in Pompton Lakes. Interment will follow at Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Montclair.
Visiting hours will be Saturday from 7-9 p.m., and Sunday from 5-9 p.m. at the funeral home.
