Rita Destito, 86, of Pompton Lakes, died Tuesday, August 21, 2007 at Lakeland Health Care Center in Haskell. Born in Belluno, Italy, Rita was the daughter of the late Louis and the late Anna (nee DeBattista) Bertagno. Marrying Frank Destito, the couple raised two daughters together. In addition to her role as a wife and mother, Rita worked for the former Union Camp before retiring. She was a long time parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi R.C. Church in Haskell, and was a member of its Womens Guild. She was also a member of the St. Marys Seniors Club, the Wanaque Golden Age Club and the Pompton Lakes Library Book Club. While raising her daughters, she also volunteered as a Girl Scout Leader. She is survived by her daughters, Loretta Brown of Franklin Lakes and Janice McFarland of Skillman; her sisters, Lydia Schmit and Louisa Yatchism, both of Kinnelon; her grandchildren, Eileen Brown Tanko and Joanne Brown Van Dyk; and her great-grandchildren, Amanda Tanko, Erika Tanko, Kaitlyn Van Dyk and Michael Van Dyke. She was predeceased by her husband, Frank, and her brother, Foster Bertagno. Funeral services will begin 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home and will proceed to a 10:30 a.m. Mass at St. Francis of Assisi R.C. Church in Haskell. Interment will follow at Christ the King Cemetery in Franklin Lakes. Visiting hours will be Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Friends of the Poor, St. Francis of Assisi Church, 1 Father Hayes Drive, Haskell, NJ 07420 would be greatly appreciated.
