Obituary of Charles Port Jr.
Charles William Port, Jr., 82, of Wanaque, died at home Saturday, December 30, 2017.
Born in Mankato, Minnesota, he was the son of Lillian ( nee Skusa) and Charles William Port. He later moved to Clark Summit, PA, and then to East Orange, where he lived with his stepmother, Evelyn Tamblyn Port, his father and his five siblings. He graduated from Clifford Scott High School and received his B.A. and M.A. from Montclair State University. Charles attended NYU, and worked towards his doctorate degree while teaching at Linden High School and later Ramapo Regional High School in Franklin Lakes, where he also served as the tennis coach. He became a professor at Bergen Community College where he taught until his retirement.
Charles married Eileen Brown in 1963. They resided in Oakland and then for 53 years in Wanaque. Charles was very proud of his three children, Richard Charles Port, Leslie Anne Port, and Christopher Charles Port. He enjoyed golf, boating, tennis, bicycling on the beach in Florida, and traveling. Football became a big part of his life as his son, Christopher played for Don Bosco Prep and the New Orleans Saints.
Charles leaves behind his wife, Eileen; son Richard, and wife, Christine; daughter Leslie; son, Christopher and his wife Adrienne; six grandchildren: Ashley, Tamara, Alex, Cheyenne, Skylar, and Isabella; and great-granddaughter, Avery; his brothers, Gary Port and wife Annette, and Todd Jenkins and wife Hope. He was predeceased by his sisters, Carol and Joy, and his brother, Donald Jenkin, as well as his second step-mother, Pauline Port.
Visiting hours will be Friday from 2-4 & 6-8 pm at the M. John Scanlan Funeral Home. A funeral Mass will be held 10 am Saturday at St. Mary's RC Church, Pompton Lakes. Burial will be privately held. www.scanlanfuneralhome.com
