Obituary of Robert Calandra

Robert J. Calandra, 73, of West Milford, formerly of Virginia Beach, VA, died Friday, April 13, 2018.

Born in New York City, Robert was the son of Jack and Elizabeth “Betty” Calandra. Raised in Queens, he had an active modeling and acting career during his entire youth. Following graduation from high school he worked for the New York City Police Department and then during college, he began his career working in human resources where he met his wife Elaine. The couple married and in the early 70’s, settled in Pompton Lakes and had two children.

Robert worked as a Special Police Officer in Pompton Lakes, and also served as a Councilman there in the early 1980s. He then moved to Virginia Beach and had a long and successful career with the Virginia Beach Police Department as a patrolman and then detective, where he specialized in domestic violence and missing person cases. During that time, he married Ruby Rapp with her two children Brandon and Nicole Goss. In retirement, he worked as an investigator assisting Scotland Yards out of the Washington, D.C. office and traveled frequently. He also finished his graduate work in psychology from St. Leo’s University.

Robert loved animals, especially his black lab, Jake. He lived an active lifestyle, holding a sixth degree black belt in Kung Fu. He also enjoyed jogging, weight lifting as well as long hikes and walks with his dog Jake. As a born-New Yorker, Robert held a great passion for the city’s sports teams, especially the Yankees and the Giants.

Robert is lovingly survived by his children, Stephanie Albinson and her husband, David, and Michael Calandra and his wife Adrienne; his grandsons, Collin, Gavin and Daniel; his cousins, Donna Kozuch, Benji Kozuch, Jim Kozuch, Donna Wilson, Steven Roman, Robert Roman, Frank Roman, Elizabeth and Dolly Vantroba, and other loving relatives.

Robert was a loving father, grandfather and a great friend to everyone who knew him. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends. Visiting hours will be Thursday, April 19 from 10 am to 12 pm at Scanlan Funeral Home in Pompton Plains. A service will be held at the funeral home at 12 pm at the conclusion of visitation. Cremation will be private.
