Obituary of Michael Durkin

Michael Patrick Durkin, 77, of Toms River, formerly a longtime resident of Haskell, died Thursday, July 5, 2018.

Born in Manhattan, Michael was one of three children born to Irish immigrants, Patrick and Delia Durkin. Raised in the Bronx, he graduated from Samuel Gompers High School in 1958 before earning his B.S. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the City University of New York.

While at an Irish hurling game in Croke Park, Michael noticed a girl at the game. He asked his brother Bill, who was more outgoing than he was, to introduce him. He quickly fell for that girl, Margaret Coyle, and on February 22, 1963, they married. They soon started a family, and would eventually be blessed with a total of six children. They remained in the Bronx until 1970, when they moved out to Haskell to be closer to Michael's job at Kearfott Navigation.

From 1970 until 2017, the Durkin home in Haskell was the world headquarters of Michael's tribe. He solely designed and built an enormous addition to the small cape, raising it to a six bedroom home that he slowly did on weekends and on his vacation time off. There, he loved being surrounded by his family, practicing his woodworking, or teaching his 13 grandchildren a lot about life.

Michael held a long career at Kearfott, and was instrumental in the Mercury, Apollo and Space Shuttle Missions during his tenure there.

More than anything, Michael's family will remember him most for the relationship he had with his grandchildren. He was a doting, devoted grandfather and each of those 13 grandchildren brought him so much joy.

He is survived by his children, Anne Marie Durkin, Brian Durkin, Cathy Durkin-Fletcher, Theresa (Durkin) Struck, Patrick Durkin and Mary (Durkin) Miraglia; his brother, William Durkin; 13 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret, and his sister, Ann McCarthy Cafone.
