Obituary of Peter J Barrett
Peter (Pete, PJ) of Pompton Plains passed away peacefully at home with his family around him on Wednesday, July 25Th, 2018.
He is survived by his devoted daughter Mary Raczko and husband Bob, loving son Peter and wife Peggy, grandchildren Annie Williams and her husband Frank, Tim Raczko and his fiance Molly Moltane, Theresa Raczko and Regina, Laura and Peter Barrett and loving cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Mary (Maura) nee Sweeney in 2008 and by his 13 brothers and sisters.
Pete left his farm home in Ireland to make a life in the United States. He landed in New York in 1948 and lived with his brother John and family. He started in the grocery business first at Peter Reeves, then Safeway, Finast and C-Town. He was a store manager for many years. Once he had saved enough money he returned to Ireland June 7, 1955 and married the love of his life Maura Sweeney. Together they returned to the states and lived in the Inwood section of Manhattan. This is where they raised their two children Mary and Peter. In 1991, Pete and Maura moved to Pompton Plains, NJ, where they lived with their daughter Mary, her husband Bob and their family.
He enjoyed being with his family, especially around the holidays and other special occasions. He also enjoyed gardening and loved to go on walks around the neighborhood and to his church, Our Lady of Good Counsel, with his wife, Maura.
Pete was a kind hearted man with a jolly laugh and a million dollar smile. He was quite the trickster with a twinkle in his bright blue eyes. He was a devoted Catholic who attended daily mass when he could and in later years watch it on television. Pete loved sports; his favorite teams were the New York Mets and Giants.
He will be remembered lovingly by his friends and family; may he rest in peace.
The family will receive visitors on Friday, July 27th from 6-9 PM at Our Lady of Good Counsel RC Church, 155 West Parkway, Pompton Plains, NJ 07444.
A funeral mass will be celebrated 10:30 am on Saturday at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church. Interment will follow at St. Anthony's Cemetery in Nanuet, NY.
