Obituary of Monica Ward
Monica Ward, 75, of Lincoln Park, died Thursday, August 2, 2018.
Born in New York City in 1942, Monica was the daughter of the late Bertrand and Mary Carey. She met fellow New Yorker Patrick Ward in 1965. They wed on June 10, 1967, and together embarked on a 50-year-long adventure.
The couple raised their three daughters while living in Washington, D.C., Connecticut, New Jersey and The Netherlands. In the late 1970s, they returned to the States, settling in Sparta, NJ, where they raised their girls on Lake Mohawk. Monica dedicated her life to her family. She also volunteered in the Sparta Township schools and for Meals on Wheels.
She started her professional life as a young secretary at Shell Oil in New York. She acted as a legal secretary for many years while living in New Jersey, and ended her career with several years as an executive assistant in the International Security Studies Department at Yale University, a position that afforded her the opportunity to take numerous literature courses, which she greatly enjoyed.
Monica lived her life with tremendous passion, energy, and, above all, kindness. She was devoted to her faith and served as a eucharistic minister at nursing homes and hospitals while living in New Jersey and Connecticut. She loved poetry, art, and travel, and shared the joy of these pursuits with her children. Later in life, she took up running and cycling, and participated in several 5K races throughout her 60s.
The extended family spent many wonderful vacations together on Cape Cod. Monica adored her grandchildren, and they adored their granny. She painted a special scene from childhood for each of them, a token of her love that they will always treasure. This was just one of many acts of kindness those who knew Monica were lucky enough to receive.
Monica is survived by her daughters, Molly Fagan and her husband Kieran, Jane Ward and her partner David Coleman, and Kate Myles and her husband Peter; her sisters, Barbara and Peggy Carey; her grandchildren, Patrick and Claire Fagan, Dermot and Conor Curtin, and Neil Myles; many beloved nieces and nephews; step-grandchildren Emma Sloane and husband Jonathan, and Catherine Coleman; and her sister-in-law Hannah Ward. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of more than 50 years, Patrick; her parents, and siblings Michael, Jane and Peter Carey.
Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 5 pm Sunday, August 5 at the M. John Scanlan Funeral Home, Pompton Plains. A funeral Mass will be held 11 am Monday at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Lincoln Park. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Valhalla, NY.
