Visitation at Funeral Home
Obituary of Arlene Mitchell
Arlene Mitchell, 81, a longtime resident of Pompton Plains, died Sunday, January 27, 2019 with her family at her side.
Born in Paterson, Arlene was the daughter of Aron and Adriana Cook. Arlene fell in love and married Daniel on May 10, 1958.
The couple lived briefly in Paterson before settling in Pompton Plains in 1961, where they raised their three children. A stay-at-home mom, Arlene worked hard to provide the comfort and consistency her children needed. Once they were all school-age, she returned to work, and spent most of her career working as a telephone operator at Chilton Memorial Hospital in Pompton Plains.
Arlene loved nothing more than a good surprise party, and her family loved to throw her one. Celebrations of her 60th and 80th birthdays are all fondly remembered. She also loved to vacation with Daniel, and the couple enjoyed several cruises during their 60 year marriage, including destinations as far away as Alaska.
Though Arlene had struggled with illness over the past few years, the whole family was able to come together and enjoy time with her this past Christmas. She is lovingly survived by her husband, Daniel; her children, Daniel Mitchell III, James Mitchell and his wife Phyllis, and Donna Travers and her husband Peter; her grandchildren, Katelyn Mitchell, Sean Mitchell, Dean Mitchell, Kimberly Travers and Alyson Travers; as well as her many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Wednesday from 3-7 pm at the M. John Scanlan Funeral Home, Pompton Plains. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at the First Reformed Church Cemetery, Pompton Plains.
In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Jude's Children's Hospital or Pequannock EMS in Arlene's memory would be greatly appreciated by the Mitchell family.
