Obituary of Lorraine C. Heffelfinger

Lorraine C. Heffelfinger, 87, a longtime resident of Pompton Plains, died Sunday, June 9, 2019 in the care of her family.

Born in Frackville, PA, Lorraine was the daughter of Stephen Merchlinski and Doris Kehler. Raised in the coal-mining region of the Pennsylvania, she was a graduate of Mahanoy Area High School.

While working in her mom & step-father's luncheonette, she met Richard Heffelfinger, a young man from the next town over. He caught her eye immediately, and in order to get him to come back, she stole his wallet! He did return the following day, and asked Lorraine out on a date. Her plan worked, and in 1952, the couple married.

Lorraine and Richard started their marriage living in central Pennsylvania, and welcomed the birth of their first child, Deborah, there. Richard was serving in the Navy at the time, and was stationed in Corpus Christi, Texas. The family reunited there, and following Richard's time with the U.S. Armed Forces, moved to Pompton Plains in 1957. The birth of their son, Wayne, soon followed.

Lorraine worked from home as a beautician as she cared for her children during their early years. She briefly worked at Reeves International once they were grown, but that was short-lived, returning to care-taking once her grandchildren were born. She adored each of her five grandchildren, and although she was a strict mother, became a total pushover once she was a grandma. She loved to indulge them at her "fun house," and made sure they were always well-fed.

Following Richard's death in 2008, Lorraine returned to work once again, and regularly worked as a Hostess at the Plaza 23 Diner in Pompton Plains.

Lorraine was a social person, and loved playing cards and going to bingo with the longtime friends she made in Pequannock. She also loved to play the slots, and would take trips to Atlantic City or to the Mount Airy Lodge whenever she could.

Lorraine is lovingly survived by her children, Deborah Erling and her husband George, and Wayne Allen Heffelfinger and his wife Elizabeth; her grandchildren, Katy Shively and her husband Trent, Douglas Erling, Kara Branock and her husband Justin, Dana Fallon and her husband Christopher, and Adam Heffelfinger; and her great-grandchildren, Kami Branock, Hayden Shively, Jayden Branock, Kendall Shively, and Jacoby Branock. She was predeceased by her husband, Richard, in 2008.

Visiting hours will be Wednesday from 7-9 pm and Thursday from 10 am - 12 pm at the funeral home. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 12 pm Thursday following the visitation period. Cremation will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Pequannock Township First Aid Squad, PO Box 33, Pompton Plains, NJ 07444 in Lorraine's memory would be greatly appreciated by her family.
