Elizabeth "Betty" Ann Conklin, 93, of Cedar Crest Village in Pompton Plains, died Saturday, September 7, 2019.
Born in Flushing, NY, Elizabeth was the daughter of Percival "Bill" and Anna Bailey. Marrying Robert J. Sperl, Sr., the couple settled in Pompton Plains, and together raised two sons and a daughter.
In her early years, Elizabeth was a devoted mother and wife and an active member of the community. She was very involved with the grammar school that all three children attended, working as a volunteer secretary in the school office. An avid seamstress, she made most of her daughter Kathy's clothes. She was a beautiful woman that many used to compare to Bess Meyerson. She loved to dance, laugh and had many friends.
After divorcing Robert, she returned to work, employed first by Exxon before joining her second husband, John Conklin, at the General Adjustment Bureau in New York City. Following John's semi-retirement, Elizabeth continued to work for her husband from their Centre Valley, PA, home, for many years.
John and Elizabeth enjoyed many years of marriage together, traveling to Europe and Florida frequently, and having a standing date for dinner and dancing at the Friar Tuck every Friday night. They loved to golf together, and generally just enjoyed each others' company. Sadly, he predeceased her 11 years ago.
Elizabeth moved from Pennsylvania to Cedar Crest at that time, returning to Pompton Plains. Living in the community was great, especially because her sister, Jean Farrell, lived there as well.
Although Elizabeth never got too involved in the many clubs and activities the community had to offer, she did find a dear friend, Ed. The two would go out to dinner together and explore the world outside the gates of Cedar Crest.
Elizabeth was always a very positive person, and everyone who knew her thought the world of her.
She is survived by her children, Robert "Rocky" Sperl and his significant other, Andrea P. Peebles, Kevin J. Sperl, and Kathleen "Kathy" Sperl-Bell and her husband, William Bell; her step-children, Patricia, Nancy, Peggy, Johnny, and Michael; her grandchildren, Tony Sperl and his wife Elizabeth, Tim Sperl and his wife Jennifer, Meghan Legge and her husband Calvin, and Dan Sperl; as well as her great-grandchildren, Christian Sperl, Casen Sperl, Lily Sperl, Kenley Legge, Jean Ann Sperl, and Julian Legge. She was predeceased by her husband, John, and her sister, Jean Farrell.
Cremation was private. A memorial service is being planned for a future date.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Diabetes Foundation would be greatly appreciated by Elizabeth's family.
