Betty Tolman Grebe

Obituary of Betty Lu Tolman Grebe

Betty Lu Grebe, loving and wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and beloved wife to husband Robert, passed away on September 7, 2019.   Betty brought a wonderful sense of humor and love of life to everything she did.  She loved to sing.

“B’Lu” was born Betty Lu Tolman in Springfield, MA, June 19, 1927. She studied group work at the University of Massachusetts.  After graduating in 1948, she became the Young Adult Program Director for the YMCA in Bridgeport Connecticut. It was there that she met her husband Robert Grebe, then a television news editor. They married in 1953 and had five children between 1954 and 1964.

Betty devoted many years to the Girl Scouts and other social service organizations.  In 1962, Betty became a Brownie leader, after which she went on to lead several other Girl Scout troops in the 1960s and 1970s.  In 1978, she was hired as Education Director for the Girl Scouts of Westchester/Putnam and continued to work for them, training other leaders, until she retired in 1989.  She was awarded the “Thanks Badge” for individuals who have made an exceptional contribution to the Girl Scout movement.  She also volunteered for Planned Parenthood and a soup kitchen in Peekskill.

After her retirement, she and Robert travelled extensively in Europe and Russia.

She is survived by her four children, Robin (John) Phillips, Susan (Erich) Kramer, Linda (Mark) DeLaurentis and Richard (Elizabeth) Grebe; eight grandchildren, and a great-grandson.  She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 57 years, an infant son Dana, and her brother Robert.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson are welcome.
