Obituary of Doris A. Hayenhjelm
Doris A. Hayenhjelm of Wayne, New Jersey, died on Friday, November 1, at the age of 90 at Chilton Hospital in Pompton Plains in the company of her family after many years of struggling with arthritis and associated complications.
Originally from Brooklyn, N.Y, the family also lived in Michigan for several years before settling in Wayne, N.J. Doris was an active member of the First Reformed Church of Pompton Plains. She described her community at Sisco Village as a place where everyone was always willing to lend a hand. She loved to travel, enjoying the Jersey shore and trips to National Parks with her family. But more than anything, Doris was known for her love of her grandchildren whose ages span 3 decades. Her grandchildren describe her as someone who was ahead of her time: she married her husband at the age of 28 (he died in 1998), and had her last child in her forties, a very uncommon practice at that time. She rarely missed a soccer game, play, dance recital, concert or any other random event in her grandchildren's lives, often driving significant mileage in any given day through Sussex, Passaic and Essex counties.
Doris is survived by her son, Daniel Hayenhjelm and his wife Nancy; her daughters, Amy Hayenhjelm and her husband Patrick O'Connor, and Melissa Hayenhjelm; and her 8 grandchildren Stephen Hayenhjelm and his wife Jackie, Noelle Hayenhjelm, Olivia Hayenhjelm, Harrison Hayenhjelm, Brady O'Connor, Shannon O'Connor, Jason Rapoza and Jake Rapoza..
Family and friends may visit from 4 to 8 pm on Thursday, November 7 at the M. John Scanlan Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Friday at the First Reformed Church of Pompton Plains. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with lunch immediately after at the Grace Hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Doris's memory can be made to the Arthritis Foundation National Office, 1355 Peachtree St NE Suite 600, Atlanta, GA 30309
