Obituary of Stephen Joseph Jackson

Stephen Joseph Jackson, 60, of Totowa, died Saturday, November 30, 2019.

Born in Paterson, he was the son of Stephen Charles and Mary Jackson. A graduate of Don Bosco High School, he went on to earn his B.A. in Psychology from Washington University. He cared for his parents at home until their final days, and that experience led him to pursue a career in nursing. He was a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing and finished an accelerated program at William Paterson University in Wayne, and earned his B.S. in Nursing just 18 months later.

Stephen's career centered in pharmaceutical research, as Drug Safety and he worked at Pfizer, Daichi, Bayer, and Johnson & Johnson pharmaceutical companies.

While shopping at Barnes and Noble in West Paterson, Stephen met Monique Sales. The couple has been happily married since July 29, 2005, and enjoyed being together as much as they could. They enjoyed traveling the world (Portugal, Switzerland, Quebec, Philippines) and seeing amazing places, but also enjoying quiet time together, especially in the sanctity of the church, where they found respite from the busy world.

He was also a gifted musician, sang for friends, the church to which he belonged and even - on occasion - in public venues. He composed original music on the guitar, often composing his own lyrics in Portugese or Spanish.

Stephen adored his dog, Hugo; they loved to listen to the Hockey radio and recently began dressing him up in NY Islander's Jerseys while he rooted on the team.

Stephen was a brilliant man, and was able to speak Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Chinese and Philippine Tagalog & Ilocano languages. He was a very religious man. He could recite the Lord's Prayer in several languages and would recite the Rosary with Monique every night. He used to volunteer & helped the sisters /nuns and even had pictures with Mother Theresa in Newark.

He is survived by his loving wife, Monique; his siblings-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Emmanuel Malasig, Mr. and Mrs. John Sales, and Mrs. & Mrs. Pascual Sales III; and his nieces and nephews: Emmanuel Malasig and his wife Jillian and their daughter Olivia Wren, Ria Johanna and her husband Luis Martinez and their children Lucas and Lyla Johanna, Janella Sales, Kathleen Jade, Paula Sales, Anthony King Sales, Marceline Kate Sales, Kamille Sales, and Alyanna Sales. He was predeceased by his parents, Stephen and Mary Jackson.

Visiting hours will be Friday from 5-9 pm at the M. John Scanlan Funeral Home, Pompton Plains. Funeral services will begin 8 am Saturday at the funeral home and will proceed to a 9:30 a.m. Funeral Mass at St. James of the Marches RC Church, Totowa. Burial will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Totowa.

In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Jude's Children's Hospital in Stephen's memory would be greatly appreciated by his family.
