Obituary of Douglas E. Campbell

Douglas Edward Campbell, 83, a lifelong resident of Pompton Plains, passed away peacefully at home on March 12, 2020 after a long illness, with his wife and their children by his side.

Born in Montclair, NJ, Douglas was the son of George and Elizabeth Campbell. As a young entrepreneur he partnered with his best friend, Skip Arnold and together formed A&C Paving in Pompton Plains. He served his country in the US Army Reserves.  Once completing service he followed his passion, and pursued a career as an auto mechanic. He was the owner and operator of Campbell's Diagnostic and Repair Center for nearly 50 years. He was well known and respected by many in the community.

Doug was an enthusiast of motorcycles, cars and boats. Over the years he had an impressive collection of rare sports cars including his favorites; his Sunbeam Tiger and Shelby Cobra which he shared many photos and stories of.

As a dedicated husband and father, Doug was nurturing and full of compassion for his family.  He appreciated the simple things in life such as his daily breakfast at his favorite cafes and diners, taking scenic car and motorcycle rides, and especially watching classic movies. He spent summers at his beach house in Seaside Park, NJ enjoying quality time with his family and taking them on boat rides.

He had a witty sense of humor and optimistic view on life, always seeing the best in every person and every situation. Those who were fortunate enough to know Doug would agree that he was a genuine, kind soul that selflessly gave to others never expecting recognition. His memory will continue to bring happiness and a smile to the many lives he touched.

Doug’s spirit will forever be cherished by his surviving wife of 30 years, Laura Forsyth Campbell and their children, Jennifer, Ryan, Erin, NIcole and Emily Campbell of Pompton Plains. His former spouse, Nancy and their children, Donna Campbell and Jill Colombo(Joseph) of Pompton Plains. Three grandchildren, Joseph, Charles and Jane Colombo and one great grandson, Jesse. Sister, Linda Maschler(Robert), sister- in- laws: Nicki Campbell, Linda Koroski, Barbara Victor(Fred), brother -in-law Thomas Forsyth(Cindy) and many nieces and nephews.
