Obituary of Joan Beck

Joan Beck, 93, of Pompton Plains formerly of Clifton, New Jersey, died at home Wednesday, August 12, 2020, lovingly surrounded by family.

Born in Queens, New York, Joan was the second of seven children born to Margaret and Joseph McLinden.

She married Fred Beck, her childhood friend and sweetheart, at the age of 19. They moved to Clifton, New Jersey, where raised their three children and spent their retirement years. They loved nothing more than being surrounded by family and friends and frequently had their children and grandchildren over to swim.

Joan prided herself on graduating from Montclair State College at the age of 59. She volunteered for many years at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Paterson and was most proud of the joy she brought to others when playing Mrs. Claus during the holidays. She also volunteered at Saint Philips the Apostle Parish in Clifton, where she helped run blood drives and headed the sewing league among many other volunteer activities over the years.

After Fred’s passing in 2004, Joan was blessed with eleven great-grandchildren who filled her time. They became the center of her world and she loved attending their soccer, basketball, baseball and softball games, school plays, concerts and dance recitals.

In 2011, Joan moved to Cedar Crest, in Pompton Plains, where she made many incredible friends. She loved joining them for happy hour, dinner, Tuesday night singing at the piano, dancing and participating in outings; her favorite being a trip to an authentic Irish pub every St. Patrick’s Day. Most of all she loved when her great-grandchildren would join her for dinner in the dining hall and she could show them off.

Joan had an incredible sense of humor, spoke her mind in a forthright and loving way and touched and helped many people. She had a profound love of country and loved ending family events in a circle singing “God Bless America”.  She was loved beyond words and will be dearly missed by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and extended family.

Joan is survived by her children Robert Beck, and his wife Nancy, Joanne Morey, and her husband William, and Nancy Giampietro, and her husband Anthony; her grandchildren, Sharon Mondat, and her husband Willy, Jackie Amanullah, and her husband David, Lisa Molan, and her husband Paul, Gina Giampietro and Marissa Grandinetti, Anthony Giampietro, and his wife Jennifer, Robert Beck, and his wife, Amy, and Michael Giampietro, and his wife Maria; and her eleven great-grandchildren, Anthony, Kaitlyn, Emily, Mackenzie, Sean, Hailey, Ava, Madison, Payton, Alex and Cora, or as she lovingly referred to them AKEMSHAMPAC, to keep their birth order straight.

At the end of her life Joan was lovingly cared for by her granddaughter Gina and dear friend Marissa and for that the rest of her family is eternally grateful.

Visiting hours will be Monday, August 17 from 3-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, arrangements have been made for both indoor and outdoor seating to accommodate all visitors.  A Funeral Mass will be held 11 a.m. at St. Philip the Apostle Parish in Clifton, with burial to follow at Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Montclair.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
